The power button works. Fans spin, lights come on, maybe the keyboard glows. And the screen gives you nothing. It looks like the whole computer died, which is exactly why this one scares people.
This exact question came through a Midwest City community group just last week: a family desktop that was working fine in the morning, powers up in the evening, and will not put anything on the screen. Twenty comments of guesses. So here is the answer as an ordered checklist, the same order I use at the bench, with what each step is actually doing so you are not just poking at it.
The short version up front: power and picture are separate systems. The fans prove the power supply woke up. They prove nothing about the memory, the graphics, the cable, or the monitor, and the picture needs all four. Most black screens are one of the cheap links in that chain, and three of the checks below are free.
First: the two-minute monitor checks
Feeling silly for two minutes beats paying for a repair you did not need. In order:
- The input source. Monitors have their own menu, and a monitor sitting on HDMI 2 while the computer talks into HDMI 1 shows exactly what you are seeing: a black screen on a running machine. Press the input or source button on the monitor itself and step through them.
- The cable, both ends. Unplug the video cable at the monitor and at the computer, look at the ends, plug both back in firmly. Cables walk loose from dusting, vacuuming, and cats. If you have a spare cable, swap it. If you have a second port, try it.
- A different screen. A TV with an HDMI port answers the biggest question in one move: picture on the TV means the computer is fine and the monitor is the problem. No picture anywhere moves us inside the case.
The desktop trap: which port is the cable in?
If the computer has a graphics card, the video cable must go into the card’s ports, the ones sitting lower on the back of the case in the slot area, not the ports up by the USB cluster on the motherboard itself. On most machines with a card installed, the motherboard’s own video ports are switched off, so a cable moved to the wrong row during a move or a cleanup gives you a perfectly healthy computer and a dead black screen.
This is the single most common self-inflicted version of this problem, and it is fixed by moving one plug down four inches.
The fix that brings back more of these than anything else: reseat the memory
If the checks above changed nothing, the next stop is the memory sticks, and this is the step worth understanding instead of just doing.
Here is the mechanism. The computer cannot draw a picture without working memory, and memory connects to the board through rows of small gold contacts, not solder. Over years of heating up and cooling down every day, those contacts creep by tiny amounts and build up an invisible film where metal meets metal. Eventually one morning the connection is just barely not good enough, and the machine powers on, fails its memory check, and never gets far enough to put anything on screen. Nothing burned out. The connection went stale.
Pulling the sticks out and pushing them firmly back in scrubs those contacts clean and reseats them fresh. That is why the oldest trick in computer repair still fixes so many machines that look dead.
How to do it without hurting anything:
- Unplug the power cable, then hold the power button down for about ten seconds. That drains the standby power that stays on the board even when the machine is off.
- Touch bare metal on the case before touching any part, so static leaves through the case instead of through a chip.
- Open the levers at each end of the memory slot, pull the stick straight up, and look at the gold edge. Then set it back in its notch and press down with firm, even pressure on both ends until the levers click themselves closed. It takes more force than feels polite.
- One test worth doing: if there are two sticks and it still will not display, try booting with just one stick, then just the other. A machine that displays with one stick but not the other just told you exactly which part failed.
On a desktop with a graphics card, the same logic applies to the card itself: power everything down the same way, release the little latch at the back of its slot, pull it, and seat it back in firmly, and while you are there make sure the extra power cables plugged into the card’s top edge are clicked all the way home.
What it means if none of that worked
The free checks reach the connections. They do not reach a power supply that spins fans but sags on the rails the board actually needs, a stick of memory that genuinely died, or the rarer board and processor failures. Which one it is changes the repair completely, and anyone who quotes you a price before finding out is guessing with your money.

Laptops: the same problem wears a different coat
A laptop that powers on with a black screen has one extra suspect: the screen itself and the cable that runs to it through the hinge. The quick test is the same external-monitor trick from above. If an external screen shows your desktop, the laptop is alive and the built-in panel or its cable is the problem, which is a fixable, flat-priced repair. The one-line version
Input, cable, right port, then reseat the memory. Free, in that order, and it brings back most of the machines that arrive at my bench described as dead. When the free list runs out, stop guessing and let somebody measure it, because past that point the parts stop being cheap and the order stops being obvious.
