Shopify is a real product and some stores belong on it. The difference is what you pay for over the years and what you walk away with. I'll say it plainly: Shopify costs less to start than a store built for you. What you are choosing between is renting a platform and owning your store.
Shopify's Basic plan is $29 a month billed yearly, or $39 month to month, so five years is $1,740 to $2,340 (60 months), before premium themes or the apps most stores end up needing (checked on Shopify's pricing page October 22, 2026). I'll say it plainly: that is less than the monthly cost of a store I build. What you get for the difference is a store you own.
Card fees are real everywhere. Stripe charges its standard card fee, about 2.9% of each sale, on a store I build just as it does on any platform that uses Stripe. What I don't add is a percentage of your sales on top.
Once the build is paid in full, the completed store files are yours, including the code for any custom features I built for you. On a rented platform your product data exports, but the store itself stays on their platform.
Each option uses Stripe for payments, and all inventory and product management lives on your custom site, not on a platform you rent. A store is quoted: these are the starting prices, and I confirm the exact price once I see what you sell and how you sell it.
What a store costs month to month: every live site needs a monthly plan, from $95, and hosting is month to month, so you can cancel any month. The Full online store adds $250 a month for store hosting and support on top of your plan. Stripe's card fee comes out of each sale on every option that takes payments.
Pay the build up front or spread it over 12 months, added to your monthly plan. The total is the same either way. If you pay over 12 months and stop before the 12th payment, the site comes down after 30 days and the files stay with me. Once the build is paid in full, the store files are yours.
